According to legend, Viking invaders at stirling castle stepped on thistles whilst trying to enter the castle grounds. Their screams alerted the defenders allowing the castle to be protected. The thistle thus became the scottish national flower. not a weed but a prickly protector. the common thistle Cirsium vulgare is also hugely beneficial to wildlife, a number of insects rely on thistles for habtat and a source of food
