Nettles have long been symbols of protection and healing, often associated with both painful stings and powerful medicinal properties. Historically this has given the plant a somewhat intimidating reputation. However, beyond their painful nature, nettles are incredibly important for wildlife and biodiversity. Specifically as a food source for the caterpillars of several native butterflies. Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock, Comma, and Painted Lady.
Whether it’s used in ritual for protection or in a tea to help ease aches and pains, the nettle has long been an important plant in Britain for centuries.
