Dents de Lion, french for lions teeth, is thought to come from the shape of the petals which have a serrated edge.
Historically used by monks which is where the latin name Taraxacum officinale comes from. The word ‘officinale’ tells us it was once kept in an officina, a storeroom used by monks.
the dandelion was sometimes referred to as the sun and the moon, referring to its bright yellow flower, followed by the white fluffy seed heads which gave the gift of a wish!
Although now widely seen as an inconvenient weed, the dandelion has been an important plant used for food and medicine for centuries as well as a vital source of nectar for wildlife. Where other plants struggle to survive the dandelion persists, living in even the most inhospitable of environment. The focal point in this painting, the dandelion’s bright colour and tenacity shines through. An important and undervalued plant that is given full recognition within this piece.
